I was reminded recently that May is Military Appreciation Month, and therefore an opportunity to demonstrate our appreciation for the sacrifices and successes of our men and women in the U.S. armed forces.
The month includes Memorial Day, a federal holiday that recognizes those who died in service to our country.
While we partake in baseball games, family celebrations, graduations, etc., at this time of year, we often forget that we are still involved in a war that claims lives and creates enormous strains on the lives of our military families here at home.
As the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq draw down, thousands of our military personnel will be coming home, and while it is wonderful to celebrate Military Appreciation Month in May, it is imperative that we do not take for granted the sacrifices that our men and women in the military are making for us on a daily basis.
With tens of thousands of veterans returning from service and facing a challenging economic environment in the U.S., it is up to us (private industry) to make the extra effort to hire these individuals who have served and sacrificed for our country.
Veterans offer a unique set of job skills and possess leadership qualities developed during their years in the military. They are dependable, trustworthy, hardworking, and well-trained. Returning Heroes tax credits offer $2,400 for short-term employment, and $4,800 for every long-term unemployed hire. The Wounded Warriors tax credit for unemployment has benefits to the employer of up to $9,600 per veteran.
