HAMMOND | Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana is sponsoring a mentoring program offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Chicago to our local Boys and Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana’s Hammond Club. On Monday, March 4, Horseshoe Casino along with Big Brothers and Big Sisters will be presenting a $25,000 check to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana to jump start the program.
Horseshoe will be sponsoring this program for two years equaling a total $50,000 program sponsorship. Big Brothers Big Sisters has established a Club Based Mentoring Program at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana’s Hammond Club. Our goal is to match 20 youth from the Hammond Club in one-to-one mentoring relationships with caring, screened and trained adult mentors. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana has indicated their interest in Big Brothers Big Sisters establishing a mentoring program for youth attending Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana’s programs.
In 2007, Big Brothers Big Sisters established a formal partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs built around Club Based Mentoring. It is derived from a nationally tested model providing one-to-one mentoring services by a Big Brothers Big Sisters’ volunteer who is matched with a youth participating in a Boys & Girls Club program where activities occur at the club site. Matches meet weekly after school or in the evening from October through May. The matches center their time on a variety of activities: one-to-one time on homework help, reading, playing computer or board games, engaging in arts/crafts projects, just talking, group activities for all matches linked to key skill development such as financial literacy, presentation skills and college and career exposure, recreational activities in the gym or playground, holiday projects, academic challenges, community affairs projects, and field trips.
