HAMMOND | The Indiana Welcome Center began celebrating National Tourism Week May 4 and will continue through May 12. Throughout the week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Welcome Center will be decorated and visitors will enjoy complimentary popcorn, half price admission to the John Dillinger Museum, as well as the Civil War expo “Region United, Nation Divided: Civil War in the South Shore.”
On May 11, the Indiana Welcome Center will be hosting Explore the South Shore: Kick Off the Summer. The free event will bring local attractions and events, giveaways and activities for families from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event will feature games, giveaways, face painting sponsored by Bellaboo’s, a free carnival ride, $1 train rides, a magic show beginning at 1 p.m. and fun food in addition to information on local events and attractions.
The first 250 families to arrive at the event will receive a passport of savings from the participating organizations to use over the summer. Additionally, the first 250 children will receive an event bag.
Participating organizations include Albanese, Cabela’s, Challenger Learning Center, Pierogi Fest, RailCats, South Shore Civil War Memorial Trail, Downtown Hammond Council, Lake County Fair, City of Crown Point, Gary Parks Department, Hammond Parks Department, Munster Parks Department, NWI Oilmen, and the Hammond Port Authority.
