GARY | At least five people were injured when a First Baptist Church of Hammond van full of teenagers rolled over Thursday on Cline Avenue, police said.
The van had 12 people inside when it flipped about 9 p.m near the Gary exit, said Lake County police spokeswoman Patti Van Til.
The five people, including a teenage boy who was ejected, were transported to local hospitals, officials said.
The boy, 17, was rushed to the Gary/Chicago International Airport and was airlifted to an Illinois hospital for his injuries, church spokesman Eddie Wilson said.
"He was talking in the helicopter," Wilson said.
The passengers in the van were members of the City Baptist Schools basketball team.
They were participating in a basketball tournament at Hyles-Anderson College in St. John Township and were out getting something to eat, Wilson said.
The van was headed back toward the college's campus when the accident happened, he said.
Parents were being contacted by the school's principal and the team's coach as officials sorted out which student was at which hospital late Thursday.
Lake County crash investigators were working at the scene late Thursday.
