HAMMOND | Now in its 14th year, the Jacob's Bears program is continuing efforts to provide teddy bears and toys for the children at Haven House, a shelter for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse.

The program was established in memory of Jacob, a baby who died as a result of child abuse. In addition to bears and toys, Haven House also is requesting new twin-sized sheets and blankets this holiday season for shelter residents.

The donated toys will be given to children at the shelter as Christmas gifts, and any extras will be distributed to children at Haven House throughout the coming year as they seek shelter.

Donations can be dropped off through Friday at all Hammond fire stations; the Hammond Police Department, 509 Douglas St.; the Hammond Planning Department, 601 Conkey St.; and the Hammond Civic Center, 5825 Sohl Ave.

Checks also can be sent to buy gifts. Checks, made payable to Haven House, can be sent to: Haven House Jacob’s Bears, P.O. Box 508, Hammond, IN 46325.
