CROWN POINT | A Nov. 18 trial date was set Wednesday for a Hammond man charged with murder in the shooting of his young son.
Jason DeGroot Sr. is accused of shooting his 10-year-old son, Jason DeGroot Jr., in the back before turning the gun on himself.
The DeGroots were discovered in bed covered in blood about 5 p.m. Nov. 15, 2011, in their home in the 4000 block of Torrence Avenue.
DeGroot, 34, has been undergoing extensive psychiatric evaluations in pursuing an insanity defense.
On Wednesday, Lake Criminal Court Judge Diane Boswell set future hearing dates for DeGroot in addition to a trial date.
DeGroot's next status hearing was set for Sept. 18, with a pretrial hearing Oct. 16.
