HAMMOND | Friends of the Hammond Public Library are raising funds and awareness by asking the public to “Keep the Library Covered . . . Help Make a Quilt.” During a 10-day “quilting bee” through Saturday, quilt squares made from heavy paper will be available at the library’s Circulation Desk for a donation of $1 or more. Donors will sign their name to the quilt squares.

Donors can also  decorate their own squares from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the library, 564 State St. All materials for assembling and decorating the paper quilt are being donated by The Golden Studio.

Volunteers and students from Books, Brushes & Bands for Education will be available to decorate squares already purchased, and to assist those who wish to decorate their own squares.

The squares will be assembled into a quilt, to be displayed at a BBB4E multimedia exhibit during September at the Hammond Arts Center, 5832 Hohman Ave. The show opening is from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 28, at which time information about the library and its Friends group will be available to attendees.

Plans are for the quilt to be exhibited in different venues to raise awareness about the library, its many services, and the need for fundraising. For more information, call the library staff at (219) 931-5100, ext. 310.
