HAMMOND | Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. awarded keys to the city on Tuesday to three people who assisted Hammond police in the December bank robbery that left one officer wounded.
The awards were given to Jose Antonio Santiago Jr., of Valparaiso, Maria Anderson, of Hammond, and Hammond police Detective Sgt. David Carter.
The robbery occurred at the BMO Harris Bank, 7250 Indianapolis Blvd, and two Gary men have been charged in the incident.
Anderson called police when the bank clerk she was speaking with on the phone abruptly dropped the call, Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said.
Santiago followed the two men after the bank robbery as they drove away. Carter worked on the case to give information to the U.S. attorney's office.
The awards were presented at Mayor's Night Out at Eggers Middle School.
