HAMMOND | An admitted member of the Latin Kings street gang was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in federal prison as part of a sweeping racketeering case.

Oscar “Puppet” Gonzalez, of Hammond, signed a plea agreement with federal prosecutors in U.S. District Court in Hammond last year, acknowledging he was guilty of conspiring to participate in racketeering activity and possessing with intent to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine and 1,000 kilograms or more of marijuana.

An indictment in the case alleges Gonzalez participated in the alleged murder of a man whom his gang believed was part of a rival gang in May 2008.

Federal prosecutors also alleged Gonzalez was part of the gang and had a hand in the drug distribution operation.
