WEST POINT, N.Y. | Cadet Akeem Rutherford, son of Alfred and Vernorah Rutherford, of Hammond, recently graduated from the U.S. Military Academy.
Rutherford graduated from Hammond High School in 2008. While at West Point, he concentrated his studies in engineering, psychology and systems engineering. He was an active member of the National Society of Black Engineers, African American Arts Forum, Cultural Awareness Seminar, Cadet Gospel choir and the Spirit Band.
His senior year assignments included being a platoon leader and company training officer. Rutherford was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the Air Defense Artillery branch and will report to Fort Bliss, Texas, for his first assignment.
The U.S. Military Academy is a four-year co-educational federal undergraduate liberal arts college 50 miles north of New York City.
