CROWN POINT | A 20-year-old Hammond man is facing attempted murder and other charges in the near fatal shooting of an East Chicago tire shop employee.
Prosecutors charged Adrian Barriga with attempted murder, aggravated battery and battery by means of a deadly weapon in the man's shooting March 11.
Witnesses told police they had been at a tire shop in the 4700 block of Tod Avenue in East Chicago getting tires changed when two male Hispanics wearing black hoodies entered the shop and asked an employee when the shop closed.
The employee is reported saying something wasn't right before walking outside the garage, court records state. Three to five gunshots were heard before the wounded employee ran back into the garage.
Critically wounded, the man suffered shots to the chest, nicking part of the heart, and also his groin. A bullet fragment remains close to the man's spine, court records state.
The wounded man asked a man across from the tire shop for a ride to the hospital, during which police provided an escort.
Barriga was later identified through a photographic display, police said.
