HAMMOND | An 18-year-old man was shot to death Monday afternoon in Hammond, police said.

Cameron Sanders, of Hammond, was shot in the torso at 4 p.m. in the 1400 block of Sherman Street, police said. He was transported to Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Hammond where he died.

According to the Lake County coroner's office, he died from the gunshot wound. The death was ruled a homicide.

Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said the shooting happened in Sanders' home. He said officers were still investigating what led to the death.

There weren't any suspects in custody as of Monday night.

Friends and family members gathered outside of the home late Monday. Some friends recounted the last time they saw Sanders. Larnell Edwards, 22, said Sanders was like a younger brother to him.

He said Monday's shooting was over a "petty argument."

Judith Samson, Sanders' grandmother, called the homicide an unnecessary killing and hopes police make a quick arrest.

"His birthday was in two days," she said. "Now we have to bury him. It's just crazy."

Miller said Monday's death marked the city's second homicide this year.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Hammond Police Department at (219) 853-6490.
