HAMMOND | A 21-year-old Hammond man was identified Sunday as the victim in a crash involving a car and a bus Saturday night on Interstate 80/94.
Joshua Walberg, of the 6200 block of Madison Avenue in Hammond, died from blunt force trauma, according to the Lake County coroner's office. He was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m. at the scene of the crash.
Shawnna Popenhagen, 21, of Hammond, was driving a Toyota at 8:40 p.m. on I-80/94 near the Indianapolis Boulevard exit when Walberg grabbed the steering wheel while the couple argued, Indiana State Police said.
Popenhagen overcorrected the car to the left, which caused the car to spin into the center lane, police said. A bus from the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne was unable to avoid the car and hit it head on.
Popenhagen was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with incapacitating injures, police said.
None of the coaches, football players or cheerleaders on the bus from the University of Saint Francis were injured. The driver of the bus, William Johnson, 64, of Upland, Ind., was not injured.
