HAMMOND | Hammond Public Library events and activities represent a wide range of interests and educational topics. Here is a sampling of upcoming programs at the library, 564 State St.:
Famous African-American Women
Join the Hammond Public Library at 6 p.m. Thursday to honor Willie Mae Durr for her volunteer activities on behalf of Hammond residents. Durr was a member of the library staff from 1970 to 1985. She was appointed by the County Council as a library trustee from 1993 to 2009.
Durr also provided guidance to African-American girls through the Laura Austin Passmore Guild. She was a volunteer at a thrift shop operated by Northwest Family Services, and has also been active in Hammond political circles.
Following the tribute to Durr, Rose Productions features Cynthia Maddox in "Five Famous African-American Women." In story and song, Maddox portrays the wife of Crispus Attucks, who was killed in the Boston Massacre; Phillis Wheatley, the first Black poet in the U.S.; Sojourner Truth; Harriet Tubman, and Illinois Poet Laureate, Gwendolyn Brooks.

Photos on display
Through Feb. 27, the Hammond Public Library features photography by Wesley Bushby, an engineer with degrees from Purdue University Calumet.
His photography captures Northwest Indiana as well as area artists and musicians at work. Bushby's work may be viewed during library hours.
Batter up!
Also through Feb. 27, the Hammond Public Library displays items showcasing baseball's Negro League from the collection of Philip Clark, of Hammond. Commemorative jerseys, mitts, photos and other memorabilia are highlighted.
Teens make treats
The Hammond Public Library invites teens in grades 7 through 12 to make easy and delicious treats at a program at 4 p.m. Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. Details are with the teen librarian at (219) 931-5100, ext. 351.
Read and win
"Waddle Into Reading," the Hammond Public Library's youth winter reading program, runs through February. Children read books to earn small prizes, and may enter a drawing for a family activity basket. Details are with Youth Services at (219) 931-5100, ext. 336.
Stories for all
The Hammond Public Library presents Stories for All on at 6 p.m. Feb. 28. Youth are welcome to check out the library's new books, learn about new authors, and participate in fun activities. Details are with Youth Services at the library, (219) 931-5100, ext. 336.
Story time
The library offers youth programs Thursday, including Babies and Books at 10 a.m. for infants with a parent or caregiver. Tiny Tots, at 10:30 a.m., is for walking toddlers and a parent or caregiver.
