MERRILLVILLE | A Merrilliville couple stole more than $86,000 through false claims filed with home and vehicle insurance companies, federal authorities allege.
Darian L. Brown and Trenice R. Brown, both of Merrillville, were arrested Monday on federal warrants, U.S. District Court records in Hammond show.
Both are charged with mail fraud.
Between 2005 and 2007, the couple obtained "numerous" vehicle and homeowner insurance policies from various insurance carriers, a federal indictment states.
Between 2008 and 2012, the couple hatched a scheme to claim fraudulent losses on the insured property, including one false claim for more than $20,000 and another for $25,000 through two different insurance companies, court records allege.
"The objective and purpose of the conspiracy was to obtain money from various insurance companies by fraudulently obtaining insurance coverage on properties that did not exist, properties that did not suffer damage and by submitting fraudulent receipts," the indictment states.
The couple also used fraudulent names and Social Security numbers in some cases, the indictment alleges.
