HAMMOND | A Mexican citizen has agreed to plead guilty to a methamphetamine dealing charge that originated with a Merrillville traffic stop, federal court records show.

A plea agreement for Miguel Chavez, also known as Alberto Lopez-Medrano, was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Hammond.

Chavez admits in the plea agreement to possessing with intent to sell 500 grams or more of methamphetamine, court records show.

Chavez was indicted on the charge in February 2011 after Merrillville police conducted a traffic stop on his vehicle in the 7800 block of Broadway, court records state.

A search of the vehicle yielded about 50 grams of meth, police and court records allege.
