HAMMOND | Lake County Republican Chairman Dan Dernulc has chosen a new head for the Hammond GOP in hopes of gaining ground in the county's most populous city and attracting younger members to the party.
Political newcomer Krystal Quagliara, 28, will begin her role Monday.
“She has no allegiance to any one group,” Dernulc said. “The only allegiance is bringing in good government and doing what is right for the people of the city of Hammond.”
Dernulc said the party is looking for good candidates to run in Hammond, where Democrats control the mayor's office and all seats on the Hammond City Council.
“This is going to be long term to get people engaged and involved in the city of Hammond just like we were 20 years ago,” Dernulc said. “With Krystal I know that can be done.”
Dernulc said Hammond is one of the larger leadership changes he's making in the organization since he won election to the chairmanship in March.
Quagliara, of Hammond, said she's tracked politics on the national and local level and wanted to help prompt change.
“I got to the point if I want things to change why not me? Why not get involved and why not bring about change myself or at least be there to facilitate it?,” Quagliara said. “It's not that I have a laundry list of agenda items — that's not the case. It's kind of listening to people's ideas and being there to fairly hear them out, unbiasedly, and support people who want to do good things for the city.”
