HAMMOND | The building that once housed the popular Roller Dome skating rink is again sitting vacant.

The rink, which closed in 2008, was converted to an indoor soccer facility but has not operated since the end of September, Pamela Mitchell said.

The site has been under Mitchell's family for 37 years.

“Roller Dome made a difference in a lot of people's lives. This is where they came to hang out every week and had a lot of good memories,” Mitchell said.

“The same thing can happen again with the right leadership. There's obviously a great business opportunity here. When you leave, you can't take anything with you except what you planted behind.”

Mitchell said the building at 730 Gostlin St. is “turn key” and is available for a tenant or for sale.

For Mitchell, seeing the building's rebirth would commemorate the days when the rink was a hangout for region teenagers.

When her father bought the rink in the 1970s, he began playing popular records instead of taped organ music, a change that quadrupled the rink's business.

“The best Christmas present I ever gave my father, because the kids went crazy for it here, was the Michael Jackson 'Thriller' video,” Mitchell said. “He had a screen and projected it on the screen, and kids just went crazy over that.”

Since September, Mitchell has been asked when the building, across the street from the Cavalier Inn, will open up again.

Mitchell's answer always is “as soon as someone rents it or buys it.”
