HAMMOND | Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. has named the top two positions in the consolidated public works department.
Gary Gleason will serve as director with Johnny Perez as deputy director.
Gleason, who is the current streets commissioner, has worked for the city since 1991. Perez has been with the city since 2001 and is the director of sanitation.
Ahead of budget talks, McDermott announced plans to consolidate four of the city's departments, including streets, sanitation, recycling and most of the parks department. The consolidation is anticipated to save $1 million.
