HAMMOND | More than 300 northwest Indiana high school students will gather at Purdue University Calumet Tuesday  to discuss whether world peace is possible and “Why Should I Care?”

The topic is the focus of the daylong Rotary International World Affairs Conference, featuring perspectives by two Purdue Calumet professors who also will facilitate discussion among the students. The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Alumni Hall of the university’s Student Union & Library.

Associate Professor of Political Science Richard Rupp, American foreign policy scholar and author of the book, NATO after 9/11: An Alliance in Continuing Decline, is the keynote speaker. Colleague and Assistant Professor of Political Science Meg Rincker, who teaches courses in comparative politics, international organizations and global gender politics, also will present.

“Professor Rincker and I will discuss the role the United States and United Nations have played in managing global armed conflicts,” Rupp said.

Subsequently, student participants will discuss and analyze the current conflict in Syria and debate whether the time has come for the international community to intervene.

Sponsored by Rotary International District #6540, the World Affairs Conference seeks to engage high school students in civil discourse about world issues that impact their communities and families.
