CALUMET CITY | Officials are investigating the death of a newborn baby who was found Thursday in the bathroom of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, 4 Sibley Blvd.

The baby, listed as Baby Jackson, died at 3:44 p.m. at Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Hammond, according to the Lake County coroner's office. The newborn, whose address was listed as Homewood, did not have any injuries but her manner of death was pending.

Dan Zorzi, assistant chief for Calumet City police, said officers responded at 2:52 p.m. to the fast-food chain after receiving calls about suspicious activity in the women's bathroom.

Zorzi said officers found blood and the unresponsive baby in the bathroom. Officers started CPR on the baby before taking her to the hospital.

Police didn't know how long the baby had been in the bathroom before officers found her.

About the same time, Harvey police began investigating a report of a woman who had disposed of a placenta. Zorzi said police believe the woman might be the newborn's mother.

He said the woman was at a nearby hospital Thursday evening and police planned to questioned her.
