HAMMOND | A teenager was killed and another injured in a double shooting Monday afternoon near the parking lot of White Castle in the 7900 block of Indianapolis Boulevard, police said.

Lakice Brooks, 17, of Highland, died at 5:24 p.m. at Community Hospital in Munster from a gunshot wound, according to a news release from the Lake County coroner's office. His death was ruled a homicide.

Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda said it appears three men were in the middle of a drug deal at about 4:30 p.m. when an argument led to a struggle over a gun. One of the men sitting in the car was shot in the leg.

Brooks was sitting in the backseat was shot in the head, Hoyda said. The men pushed Brooks out of the vehicle and left him in the parking lot, police said.

The two other men fled in the vehicle but were stopped by police on May Street in Hammond.

The man who was shot in the leg is being treated at a local hospital. The third man is in custody and being questioned.

Police did not release Monday the identities of any of the men involved in the shooting. Hoyda said marijuana was found inside the vehicle.

Charges were pending Monday night.
