HAMMOND | A chase by Hammond police ended Monday morning when the vehicle they were pursuing flipped over and officers apprehended a man fleeing on foot.
Larry Hunter, 58, of the 6000 block of Columbia Avenue, was being held on charges of resisting arrest and car theft after the chase, Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda said.
At 10:05 a.m., Hammond police received a report of someone acting suspiciously and looking in vehicles in the parking lot of a business in the 1300 block of 141st Street, Hoyda said.
A short time later someone called police and said they were following a car that had been stolen from that business's parking lot. The caller told police it was a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
A Hammond police patrol spotted the vehicle turning on Summer Street and began a pursuit with lights and siren on. Police chased the SUV to Columbia Avenue and then Sibley Boulevard before the vehicle flipped over near an American Legion Post, Hoyda said. The suspect fled on foot but was quickly apprehended.
The prosecutor is expected to file formal charges by Tuesday, Hoyda said.
