HAMMOND | Police were investigating the death of a homeless man whose body was found underneath a truck in a Calumet Avenue business parking lot Monday.
Hammond police received a call about the issue at 9:48 a.m. Monday, police Lt. Richard Hoyda said. The body of Benjamin Miles, 49, was located in a parking lot in the 5600 block of Calumet Avenue near the East Carroll Street intersection, police said.
A crime scene unit vehicle, two coroner vehicles and three police vehicles were on the scene Monday morning. The parking lot was blocked off by police tape, and any people were gathered near the scene. Miles was known to frequent the area, police said.
Lake County coroner's officials pronounced Miles dead at 10:59 a.m. The coroner's report also stated Miles was homeless.
The investigation is ongoing, and the cause of death is yet to be determined.
As of Monday afternoon, police think Miles may have died of a medical incident, Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said. A surveillance video showed no one was around at the time of Miles' death as he collapsed, police said.
