HAMMOND | A 20-year-old man was in custody Monday afternoon after leading officers in a police chase into East Chicago that ended in a crash.
Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said officers originally responded at 2:51 p.m. to a call of shots fired in the 2900 block of 165th Street in Hammond.
He said a vehicle with a man and a woman quickly fled the scene.
There were no reported injuries on the original call of shots being fired, Miller said.
Officers pursued the vehicle into East Chicago where it crashed into another vehicle and a railroad gate in the area of 151st Street and Kennedy Avenue, Miller said.
The man then got out of the car and began running, Miller said. He was arrested on the 5000 block of Melville Avenue in East Chicago.
The woman, who was a passenger in the suspect's vehicle, had minor injuries, Miller said. The other vehicle did not report any injuries.
Miller said officers recovered a gun from the man. His name was not released Monday and charges are pending.
