HAMMOND | A Hammond man was shot early Wednesday while chasing two suspects who had invaded his home and robbed cash, police said.

Two male suspects forced their way into the home about 12:50 a.m. Wednesday in the 900 block of 119th Street in Hammond's Robertsdale section, police Lt. Richard Hoyda said.

The suspects demanded money, and one of them displayed a handgun, Hoyda said. They took a small amount of cash and fled on foot, he said.

A 20-year-old resident of the home started to chase the suspects, and one of them shot him in the abdomen, Hoyda said. The wound is serious, but the man is expected to recover, he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Hammond police Sgt. Steve Guernsey at (219) 852-2906.
