HAMMOND | To commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 through Oct. 15), Purdue Calumet is celebrating Latin culture with various campus activities this week.

Students, faculty, staff and local residents are invited to partake.

“Our university has a Multicultural Campus Council whose work is focused on building and maintaining an inclusive campus,” Council Co-Chair Regina Biddings-Muro said. “Throughout the year, the MCC looks for ways to engage the campus and our community in discussions, events and activities that help bring us together to learn more about each other—especially when we can have fun in the process.”

Festivities begin with a piñata at noon, Monday (9/24) in the international concourse of the Student Union & Library (SUL), followed at 2 p.m. by an opportunity for students to test their Spanish language knowledge in Calumet Falls of SUL.

Tuesday (9/25) events include salsa dancing at 1 p.m. in Calumet Falls. The dance group, “Ballet Folklorico De East Chicago,” performs at 5 p.m. in Alumni Hall of SUL.

Wednesday (9/26) features screenings of the film, “In the Time of the Butterflies,” in Calumet Falls at noon and 5 p.m. The movie, starring Salma Hayek and Edward James Olmos, conveys the true story of a family in the Dominican Republic under the rule of dictator Rafael Trujillo.

Thursday’s (9/27) final day of celebration is highlighted by DJ Kris Cheddah performing in Calumet Falls from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., during which time Tres Leches cake will be served.

Additionally, Chartwells food service will serve Latin cuisine throughout the week. Students also can stop by the international concourse for information and candy, Monday through Thursday, beginning at 10 a.m.

The activities are sponsored by the Multicultural Campus Club and coordinated by students Krystal Espinoza and Christina Lopez.
