HAMMOND | Two Purdue University Calumet School of Education Graduate Studies counseling programs—clinical mental health counseling and school counseling—have been granted the highest level of accreditation.

The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited both Purdue Calumet programs for eight years at its July 17 Board of Directors meeting.

“This recognition means our programs meet or surpass national standards to provide a smooth path toward obtaining professional licenses and employment,” Purdue Calumet Dean of the School of Education Alice Anderson said. “Graduates will be well prepared as professional counselors to fill needs of K-12 schools and mental health facilities in our community.”

She added that some states allow only graduates of a CACREP-accredited program to become licensed mental health counselors and that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hires CACREP-accredited program graduates only.

Both programs earned accreditation in their first attempt. The process included a self-study, three day campus visit by CACREP team members and verification that hundreds of standards were met. The CACREP review team interviewed students, faculty, administration, staff, alumni and site supervisors; visited and observed community internship sites; and toured the Purdue Calumet campus to assess services available to all students.

“Throughout the site visit, our graduate students and community partners were our greatest advocates,” Anderson said.
