HAMMOND | A television script five Purdue University Calumet communication students wrote for their COM 436 Script Writing class last fall earned second place in the national Broadcast Education Association Student Script Writing Competition.

The students -- Vincent Benjamin Lopez of Hammond, Autumn Cueller of Crown Point, Ashley Anne Drzal of Hobart, Melissa Falgier of Munster and Brandon M. Fles of Crown Point -- wrote their script for the episodic AMC TV series, “Breaking Bad.” The script was recognized in the TV Spec category. The students and their instructor, Associate Professor of Communication Mary Beth O’Connor, received their award at the recent Broadcast Education Association convention in Las Vegas.

“We have a long history of winning awards in this competition, and I’m extremely proud of my students for their hard work and effort,” O’Connor said. “Our students continually succeed because they know how to work hard for what they want.”

Since 2002 students from O’Connor’s Script Writing course have earned 12 awards—four first places, two seconds, five thirds and an honorable mention—in BEA competition.

Lopez, Cueller and Drzal also are part of a Purdue Calumet marketing and communication student team that has qualified for the finals of the National Student Advertising Competition, June 5-8 in Phoenix.
