A few scattered crashes coupled with heavy rains and winds slowed traffic on area expressways and commuter rail during the Wednesday morning rush.
The Toll Road bridge over Interstate 80/94 at the Lake Station interchange was closed around 9:30 a.m. due to flooding. The bridge serves as the entrance and exit ramp.
Drivers are being directed to westbound Interstate 94 to turn around at the Ripley Street exit. The flooding does not impact eastbound traffic entering the Toll Road.
The crashes and rain brought traffic on the westbound Borman Expressway to a near halt early Wednesday.
Indiana State Police said an air compressor fell off of a truck in the center left lane near Kennedy Avenue before 6 a.m. As of 6:30 a.m., traffic was slowly moving through the area. No one was injured in the incident.
Another crash in the westbound lanes near Grant Street pushed the traffic jam farther east. Police said a pickup truck slid off to the road approaching slowed traffic due to the earlier problem with the air compressor in the roadway.
No injuries were reported in that accident.
Both scenes were cleared and traffic was moving through the area again by 8 a.m.
Illinois State Police said the Bishop Ford Freeway was slow approaching the Dan Ryan merge throughout the morning due to a serious early morning crash on the inbound Ryan.
Westbound South Shore commuter train no. 12 was running about 10 to 15 minutes late due to weather as well. That train was scheduled to arrive at Chicago's Millennium Station at 8:08 a.m.
