HAMMOND | A fire early Sunday damaged a vacant house in the 800 block of Sibley Street, the Hammond Fire Department said.
The fire at the one-story house was reported just before 3 a.m., said Kevin Margraf, deputy chief for the Hammond Fire Department. He said the cause and origin of the fire were undetermined as of Sunday night.
He said the damage to the house was so extensive it might be demolished.
The fire could have been intentionally started, Margraf said. The house has been vacant for about two years and did not have any working utilities, he said.
Sunday's fire happened less than a block away from the site of an April 1 fire at a vacant home on Sibley Street that officials think was started intentionally. Another fire at a vacant home in the 5700 block of Erie Street also is thought to have been started intentionally.
Margraf said officials are investigating the fires and aren't sure if the three are connected.
