HAMMOND | The South Shore Civil War Memorial Trail’s exhibit “Region United, Nation Divided: Civil War in the South Shore” will feature live demonstrations by re-enactors every weekend during the month of April at the Indiana Welcome Center.

The first re-enactment will be held April 6 and April 7 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Throughout the event, re-enactors will demonstrate a soldier’s life during the Civil War, the loading and firing of Civil War-era weapons, talk about life at an encampment and answer questions. Re-enactments will continue on April 13, 20, 27, 28 and May 1.

The “Region United, Nation Divided: Civil War in the South Shore” expo will be featured at the Indiana Welcome Center April 5 through May 3. In addition to the live demonstrations, other special events and exhibits include participation by authors and an independent filmmaker, and Civil War-era encampment, photographs and artifacts. There will also be a special exhibit for CHAIRish the Children.

The South Shore Civil War Memorial Trail is a collection of the last known resting places, monuments, architectural icons and sites with Civil War ties that are related to the brave men and women from the region who sacrificed during the most pivotal period in our nation’s history. The trail serves as a guide for visitors who wish to pay their respects to the veterans and learn the stories of their humanity and sacrifice during and after the war.

The Indiana Welcome Center is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 7770 Corinne Drive, Hammond.
