HAMMOND | The dust has settled and the foundation has set, as Purdue University Calumet’s Red Brick Rhetoric has secured South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority as a client to perform a communication audit.

The class, Problems in Public Relations, in which RBR was founded, is a student-run firm comprised of 16 public relations professionals, who provide their talents to perform a communication audit for the tourism group.

After pitching to seven potential clients, South Shore CVA provided the best opportunity for members of RBR to analyze the effectiveness of communication for both the South Shore CVA’s internal and external publics.

Nicki Mackowski-Gladstone, vice president and chief communication officer of South Shore CVA, said that South Shore CVA wants to achieve a better understanding of the public’s perception of its organization, as well as the opinions on the various special events, conventions and sporting events that are brought to the area.

The members of RBR are working with the South Shore CVA to help them understand the community’s perceptions of the organization, broaden the awareness of what they provide to their publics and how those publics perceive them.

RBR is committed to providing South Shore CVA with the most professional audit, producing recommendations to help better the flow of communication within the organization, said Cait Lackey, CEO of Red Brick Rhetoric.

“I have a higher expectation then previous clients because I know and understand the process and proper protocol,” said Mackowski-Gladstone, also a former Problems in PR student.

“I have set the standard high and we will get this done,” said Lackey pertaining to the execution of the audit. “We are positive that we will fulfill the needs of the client as promised.”

A communication audit is comprised of four methodological steps that include: benchmarking, interviews, focus groups and surveys. The data collected is analyzed and recommendations are given based on the effectiveness of each communication channel. The findings provide South Shore CVA with a better understanding of their own communication practices.

Red Brick Rhetoric has completed the benchmarking phase of the audit, in which companies that are similar and dissimilar from South Shore CVA are asked a series of questions pertaining to the internal and external communication practices put in place at the selected organizations.

The next step of the audit is the interview process. Members of RBR are moving forward with interviewing and will begin analyzing the data.
