HAMMOND | A reputed member of the Imperial Gangsters street gang who was days away from standing trial entered a plea agreement, according to court records.
Salvador Chavez, of Chicago, pleaded guilty Monday to racketeering activity, according to a plea agreement filed in federal court. Part of the plea includes a binding agreement that states the maximum sentence he could face is 25 years in prison.
Chavez is scheduled to be sentenced June 20.
He and other alleged members of the Imperial Gangsters were scheduled to stand trial Wednesday. Chavez is the latest defendant to enter a plea agreement.
Richard Reyes, of East Chicago, is the only defendant who will stand trial Wednesday, according to court documents.
