HAMMOND | A 30-year-old man was killed in a shooting Tuesday night in the 7500 block of Chestnut Avenue, police said.

Marchello Valliant, of the 1500 block of 174th Street in Hammond, died at 5:47 p.m. at Community Hospital in Munster, according to a Lake County coroner's office news release. The death was ruled a homicide.

Three men were inside a parked vehicle just before 5 p.m. when an altercation led to shots being fired, said Lt. Richard Hoyda, of the Hammond Police Department. Two men were seen leaving on foot from the car.

Police found Valliant in the driver's seat with multiple gunshot wounds, Hoyda said. He was taken to Munster Community Hospital where he later died.

Hoyda said it wasn't clear what led to the fight. The two men who were seen running from the car were described as young adults. One man was wearing a gray sweatshirt and the other was wearing a yellow t-shirt.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Hammond Police Department at (219) 853-6490.
