HAMMOND | Art Lenders, a visual art auction of works by School City of Hammond students, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Morton High School, 6915 Grand Ave.

More than 25 original artworks will be up for bid, and refreshments and live musical entertainment will be provided by Columbia Elementary School students.

This fifth annual exhibit and fundraiser features artwork from the School City of Hammond's elementary art students, in grades 1 through 5. Artworks will be up for bid for local businesses to display at their places of business for one year.

Bidding starts at $30, and all artwork is framed and ready for to be displayed. A photo and information about the young artist and Art Lenders program will also be provided, so that it may be displayed along with the art for one year. At the end of that year, art work will be returned to the artist.

This year, organizers will also offer a secretary desk, handpainted in the expressionist style of Vincent van Gogh by fifth-graders. Inspiration was taken from van Gogh’s famous "Starry Night" painting, as well as his sunflowers and iris series.

Stars, swirling lines, and colorful flowers pop on the blue backdrop of this beautiful, yet sturdy and functional piece. Anyone can bid on this one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Bidding starts at $50, and the winner gets to take home the desk forever.

All proceeds will fund programs to enhance art education in the School City of Hammond, such as Enviro Art, a cross curricular art and science workshop offered to select fifth-graders.
