CROWN POINT | Prosecutors on Wednesday charged two Hammond men with murder in Monday's slaying of 17-year-old La'Kice Brooks.
Jayveon Daniels and Duane Snelling Jr., both 20, are accused of killing Brooks, of Highland, during an altercation over the purchase of an ounce of marijuana.
Daniels told police he went with Snelling, a cousin, to meet Brooks, who had contacted Snelling about buying the marijuana, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Snelling is alleged to have shot Brooks multiple times during a subsequent encounter, leaving Brooks wounded in the street.
Witnesses who saw the men fighting heard three gunshots before Daniels and Snelling fled the scene in the 7900 block of Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond.
Police spotted Snelling's car, described as a silver Tracker, on Tapper Avenue just east of Field Street, discovering Snelling with a leg wound.
Brooks died enroute to Munster Community Hospital having suffered wounds to the left arm, abdomen and head.
