HAMMOND | Two new model homes will soon be built at the Parrish View subdivision, aiming to draw interest to the neighborhood that offers new home construction.
The city hopes construction at the subdivision off of Parrish Avenue and 169th Street will pick up as market conditions improve, said Alexius Barber, executive director of United Neighborhoods Inc.
The two model homes, estimated at $200,000 each, will be paid for out of Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr.'s discretionary gaming money.
Barber said the hope is to pre-sale the homes, which she said will ease the process for buyers looking for new home construction.
Barber said UNI also is working to attach incentives to the development.
“What we'd really like to see is once the market sees momentum ... the buyers themselves will decide to build (homes) and customize to their likings as well,” Barber said.
Currently, 11 houses are built in the subdivision, which officially opened in 2007. Barber, whose nonrofit organization helped develop the community, said 17 lots remain.
Barber said public safety officials and teachers live in many of the existing homes.
Construction should begin on the homes in the next 30 days. Improvements to the subdivision's gazebo area and the potential addition of swing sets also are in the works, Barber said.
“It gives another option to existing homeowners who desire new construction,” Barber said. “Even though there's a lot of nice homes in Hammond, we don't have a lot of new houses. It attracts that market.”
