HAMMOND | A Hessville used car lot has gotten its license back after city officials said environmental problems at the site had been addressed.
Savana Motors, 6507 Kennedy Ave., was cited last month for allegedly dumping used motor oil on the property and for selling air conditioning coolant recharges without proper recovery equipment or required reporting.
Freon, also known as R-12, was phased out as an air conditioning coolant more than a decade ago when its class of chemicals, known as chlorofluorocarbons, was determined to be harmful to the planet's protective ozone layer.
Federal and state laws require that both freon and its modern replacement, R-134, be captured when removed from cooling systems, and the date and quantity reported to environmental regulators.
Hammond Department of Environmental Management officials said Thursday that the oil and coolant disposal issues at Savana Motors had been addressed.
Operator Ahmad Olaimi, who opened the lot in October, said he would no longer offer air conditioning recharges or any other vehicle repair work at the site.
His business license was then reinstated by the Board of Public Works and Safety for another 12 months on a probationary basis.
