HAMMOND | U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Ind., urged Purdue University Calumet graduates Tuesday, Dec. 17 afternoon “to consider using your enhanced talents to make our region a better place to work and live.”

Visclosky addressed more than 485 fall and summer graduates, their family members, friends, and university faculty and staff during Purdue Calumet December Commencement Exercises at the Hammond Civic Center. Overall, the graduating class consists of 907 individuals—the largest contingent of fall graduates in Purdue Calumet history. They earned 122 masters, 754 baccalaureate and 31 associate degrees.

“Find something that can be improved,” Visclosky, who has represented Indiana’s 1st Congressional District since 1985, told the graduates. “. . . Be persistent, work cooperatively and be urgent.”

The dean of Indiana’s congressional delegation also encouraged the graduates to remain positive. “Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t!” he said. “. . . Have hope and undertake your journey with confidence and resolve.”

Purdue Calumet Student Government President Adam Cooper, representing the study body, added brief remarks, encouraging his former classmates “to become lifelong learners. . . Continuing to learn is an excellent and absolutely necessary way to stay ahead of the curve.”

Purdue Calumet Chancellor Thomas L. Keon presented Chancellor’s Medallions to graduating seniors with the top grade point average in each of Purdue University Calumet’s six academic colleges. Other distinguished baccalaureate degree candidates, as well as those graduating from the honors program also were recognized.

This December’s class increases to more than 49,000 the number of degrees awarded to Purdue graduates of Purdue University Calumet.
