HAMMOND | Girl Scouts of the Calumet Council, in Highland, learned a lesson in helping others by assisting sponsor Lucy Perz in an annual project  to help the needy.

For a full year, they collected clothing and stored it at a local warehouse in preparation for a planned distribution day.

Round the Clock, a Highland restaurant, and the Girl Scouts, family members and friends, served approximately 300 people a meal at the Hammond Civic Center during the clothing giveaway.

They also provided nonperishable food items compliments of NIPSCO and the St. Thomas More Knights of Columbus/Ushers Club, with pastries provided by Munster Donut, Cakes by Karen, of Highland, and Calumet Bakery in Lansing.

This is the 27th year Perz and her family have been sponsoring this program.
