WHITING | The Whiting Lions Club hosts its third annual "The Battle of 119th Street" Street BBQ Aug. 22 at the intersection of Atchison Avenue and 119th Street.
The location is on the border of Hammond and Whiting.
It's in honor of the 79-year high school football rivalry between the Hammond Clark Pioneers and the Whiting Oilers.
The Lions Club is treating the players, their coaches and cheerleaders to a BBQ dinner of hot dogs, hamburgers and bratwurst at 5 p.m.
The guest speaker is Emery Moorehead, tight end for the 1985 champion Chicago Bears.
The event is open to the public. Tickets to the battle BBQ are $17 for adults, $12 for students. Tickets are at the Whiting Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce, Centier Bank in Whiting or by calling (219) 659-1658.
The "Battle of 119th Street" football game is Aug. 24 at Whiting's Ray Gallivan Field. The winning school will be awarded a $500 college scholarship from the Whiting Lions.
