HAMMOND | The winter storm that swept through Northwest Indiana this week caused disruptions in the ongoing federal case against the Imperial Gangsters street gang.

According to a motion filed Wednesday, the trial for Salvador Chavez and Richard Reyes will start Wednesday rather than Monday. A federal judge ordered the delay, citing the recent winter storm and the illness of a co-counsel.

Chavez, of Chicago, faces two counts of conspiracy to participate in racketeering activity and two counts of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana, according to court records.

Reyes, of East Chicago, is accused of being involved in the Sept. 16, 2007, fatal shooting of Rene Alonzo, according to an indictment.

He faces two counts of conspiracy to participate in racketeering activity, two counts of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana, two counts of murder in aid of racketeering activity and two counts of murder resulting from use of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, according to court records.
