HAMMOND | A 37-year-old woman was shot to death by her husband late Saturday, police said.
Renata Marquez, of the 2000 block of Lincoln Avenue in Hammond, died at 2:30 a.m. Sunday of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Lake County coroner's office. The death was ruled a homicide.
Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda said the woman's mother called police after she found Renata Marquez wounded in the home about 11:48 p.m.
Hoyda said it appears there was some kind of domestic disturbance earlier in the night.
The woman's mother had tried to call Marquez's husband, and later went to the home when she wasn't able to reach him by phone.
Police found Marquez's 38-year-old husband in the home who had shot himself, Hoyda said. He remained in critical condition Sunday at an Illinois hospital.
Hoyda said detectives believe the unidentified husband shot Marquez and himself in an attempted murder-suicide. Officers recovered the gun in the home.
There was a 4-year-old child in the home during the time of the shooting who was not injured. The child's relationship to the couple was unclear Sunday.
A group of teary-eyed women who identified themselves as Marquez's family sat outside the house Sunday afternoon in the quiet Robertsdale neighborhood. Children could be heard playing in the backyard.
"She was a beautiful person," said one of the women who did not want to be identified. "She didn't deserve this. The worst part is she leaves her babies behind."
The family said Marquez's maiden last name was Garcia and declined to further comment.
A neighbor who was raking leaves outside her house said she had not even heard about the shooting as of Sunday afternoon.
Hoyda said charges had not been filed as of Sunday because of the severity of the husband's injuries, but charges could be filed later this week.
