HAMMOND | All poets 8 to 88 are invited to Poetry Pantry: An Open Hand is an Open Heart - A Day of Poetry for Social Change, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Purdue University Calumet's Union Library Building, 2200-169th Street.
Everyone who loves language and writing poetry is encouraged to attend this annual event hosted by Books, Brushes and Bands for Education and the First Friday Wordsmiths of PUC. Meet new people and spend the day writing poetry, enjoying lunch and performing written work on stage.
Janine Harrison, professor of English, will lead her team through conference style sessions; participants will select up to three poetic forms and work with college level English students for instructional guidance.
The themes will focus on how words can produce social change with topics that hit home such as dealing with bullies. Publicly presenting finished work is optional. Students may choose to have their poems published online.
Advanced registration is required. Cost is $20, and $15 for each additional family member. Fee includes materials and lunch.
Each participant is asked to bring one nonperishable food item which will be donated to Northwest Family Services Food Pantry. The goal is to collect more than 100 pounds of food.
