CROWN POINT | A 17-year-old boy has been charged with murdering a man by a shooting him during a drug deal gone bad in Hammond.

Geremiah Erwin is charged with murder and murder in the perpetration of robbery.

He is accused of shooting Marchello Valliant multiple times shortly before 5 p.m. Sept. 24 in the 7500 block of Chestnut Avenue, police said.

A witness told police he and Erwin got in Valliant's vehicle with the intention of buying marijuana, at which time Erwin told Valliant "give me everything you got," according to police.

The witness told police he fled the vehicle when he saw Erwin had a gun. He said he saw Valliant try to grab the gun and heard a gunshot while he was fleeing.

Police obtained a surveillance video, which also helped identify Erwin and place him at the scene.

When police arrived on the scene, they said they found Valliant shot in the torso and holding money in his left hand. Valliant was taken to The Community Hospital in Munster, where he died.
