HIGHLAND — No Shave November has expanded into No Shave December, as Highland police officers shed their razors to promote cancer awareness.
"The administration and commission allowed us to continue until the end of December so we could raise more money," said officer Darren Conley.
With an original goal of raising $2,000 in donations, more than $2,100 has come in so far, he said.
"We had 14 officers donate and grow beards, eight officers that donated with no beards," Conley said.
The funds go to the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster, which helps people cope with the diagnosis of cancer.
Along with thanking residents, police officials and Donald R. Sheppard Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 122, Conley offered thanks to Sip Coffee, Mahoney's Towing and Krooswyk's Trucking & Excavating for their donations.
Those who give at least $10 receive a special wristband, Conley said.
Donations can be made at the police station, 3315 Ridge Road, and checks should be written to the Community Cancer Research Foundation.
