HIGHLAND | What started as a traffic stop in a city south of Atlanta ended in the arrest of a man accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend in Highland.
Isiah L. Barker, 29, of Chicago, faces murder and feticide charges in the 2011 homicide of Cynthia Funches, 26, of Highland. Funches, who was about 20 weeks pregnant, died from multiple blunt force trauma due to an assault, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The owner of a house being rehabbed in the 10000 block of South Normal Avenue in Chicago found Funches dead in a storage bin in the garage, according to court records.
Barker had since been on the run from police, authorities said.
Forest Park, Georgia police pulled over a car at 1:30 a.m. Monday for driving with high beam lights on, and noticed the passenger, later identified as Barker, appeared nervous.
Officers asked Barker to get out of the car and asked to see his identification.
Barker began to run off and hit an officer who tried to stop him, Forest Park police said. Officers continued to chase and fight with Barker for the next nine minutes.
Officers used a stun gun, pepper spray and baton, but Barker appeared to have "unbelievable strength and endurance," according to a news release from the police department.
He was finally arrested as he was trying to steal a police car, police said. Barker was taken to Southern Regional Medical Center because police believe he was under the influence of some kind of drug that gave him a high level of endurance.
He was being held Tuesday at the Clayton County Jail. He faces charges in Georgia of obstruction of a police officer, assault on a police officer and attempted motor vehicle theft.
Barker was charged with murder in Lake County and an arrest warrant was issued Nov. 1, 2012, according to court records.
Funches was last seen at 4 a.m. June 21, 2011 leaving a house with Barker on the 4900 block of South Justine Street in Chicago, police previously said. She called co-workers at 6:20 a.m. to call off of work.
According to court records, she sounded anxious while on the phone and a man could be heard in the background demanding she get off the phone. She was found dead in Chicago that same day.
Police found her Hampton-in-Highland apartment on June 22, 2011 in disarray with the carpet pulled up and blood spots on the concrete floor, according to court records.
According to Lake County court records, extradition proceedings were initiated Monday.
