HIGHLAND | The Highland Town Council has adopted the town's operating budget for 2013.

A budget of nearly $13.9 million will be submitted to the state for its approval.

In addition to this budget, the council also approved the 2013 budgets for the sanitary and water boards at $6.25 million and $506,638, respectively.

Arriving at the town's operating budget amount for next year was much easier than in previous years, when millions of dollars had to be trimmed from the initial budget draft, said Councilman Mark Herak, I-2nd.

"It was pretty realistic this year," he said.

In past years, department heads were encouraged to submit their "wish lists," which usually did not coincide with the realities of a budget, Herak said.

This year they were asked to be very pragmatic when submitting their budgets, he said.

The town's 2012 budget is about $13.5 million.

The 2012 sanitary and water budgets are $5.67 million and $259,090, respectively.

Clerk-Treasurer Michael Griffin said these two budgets are higher because loans are being paid off.
