HIGHLAND | The Town Council is buying some new equipment for the Police and Fire departments.
At the top of the list is the purchase of 46 new Glock G22 .40-caliber pistols. After trading in 42 old handguns, the total cost is $8,544.
The council also will buy 14 model 2080 tactical rifles and three model 9080 LE rifles from Rock River Arms Inc., of Summit, Ill. The total cost is $4,495 after a trade-in valued at $12,325.
Weapons are replaced when they are 10 years old, police Cmdr. George Georgeff said. Wear and tear happens with a gun even if it is used mostly at the firing range, he said.
The board also authorized the purchase of rifle accessories from Brownells Inc., of Montezuma, Iowa, for $10,348.
The council also will buy three 2014 Dodge Charger patrol cars from Thomas Dodge for $66,374.
The council approved the purchase of equipment for the cars from NWI Emergency Outfitters, of Highland, for $34,430.
The Fire Department got a green light to buy seven sets of turn-out gear at $2,045 each.
Fire Chief Bill Timmer said the old gear will either be destroyed or donated to overseas fire departments.
